World Schizophrenia Day 2023

The Department of Psychiatry, Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMSR), New Delhi celebrated ‘World Schizophrenia Day 2023’ on May 24th, 2023. The purpose of celebrating this day was to spread awareness about this illness among the patient population and their caregivers.

Schizophrenia is a chronic disorder that affects an individual’s thinking, behavior, and emotions, making it difficult to separate what is fake and what is real. This disorder can also cause severe disruptions in an individual’s personal and social life, impacting their ability to function independently.

World Schizophrenia Day serves as a platform to dispel misconceptions surrounding schizophrenia and create a supportive environment for the people affected by this condition. By promoting awareness, it encourages early detection, reduces the stigma surrounding it, and fosters empathy and understanding.

To celebrate this day, a colouring competition was organised by the Department of Psychiatry for the patients. The colouring competition tested and enforced patients’ cognition as well as their attention. Colouring helps improve fine motor skills and trains the brain to focus. It also improves sleep, reduces anxiety and promotes mood improvement. It helps calm the brain and relaxes the body.

The competition was judged by our esteemed Head of Department, Dr. Nimmi A Jose and the top five participants were awarded with gifts and certificate. This instilled the participants with motivation and joy. The event concluded with a group photograph with the participants.
